The Mazda 3 is a compact car, and the Mazda 6 is a mid-sized car. Mazda has used numbers for their model names for a long time now. The current Mazda 3 compact car replaced the Mazda 323, just as the mid-size Mazda 6 replaced the previous 626. The Mazda 3's main competition would be cars like the Civic, Corolla, Cruze, and Focus. Whereas the Mazda 6's main competition would be cars such as the Camry, Accord, Altima, Malibu, and Fusion.
Mazda also has the Mazda 2.
Also of note is the fact that Mazda vehicles share a lot of componenets with Ford cars. The Mazda 2 is very similar to the Ford Fiesta, the Mazda 3 similar to the Ford Focus, and the Mazda 6 similar to the Ford Fusion.
